NORTHBRIDGE, Mass. - Neighbors rallied around the family of Kelly and Andy Gray today after fire broke out in the basement of their two-story home at 81 Border St. and quickly spread to the first floor.

The Gray's were too distraught to talk as fire lit up their downstairs windows and smoke hovered in the air around the neighborhood. According to a neighbor and friend, the Gray's have five children, the oldest son in his late teens, the other four children elementary and middle school age.

Obituary: Nancy E. (Lovett) Kollet, 70

WHITINSVILLE, Mass. - Nancy E. (Lovett) Kollet, 70, died Thursday, Jan. 26, following an illness. She was the wife of Richard N. Kollet.

Born in Providence, RI, a daughter of William F. and Gertrude (Hanley) Lovett, she lived in Whitinsville 46 years.

She was a graduate of Saint Patrick's High School in Providence, and Roger Williams School of Nursing. She also attended the University of Rhode Island, and Saint Joseph's College in Windham, Maine.

Nancy worked as a registered nurse in emergency room nursing and as a school nurse. She was an active Girl Scout for ...

Winter Hikes Offered at Waters Farm

SUTTON, Mass. - The Blackstone River Watershed Association is offering a guided hike under the direction of Ranger Chuck Arning on Saturday, Feb. 4 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Water's Farm on Water Street, Sutton. (www.watersfarm.com).

Waters Farm, a hilltop homestead built in 1757, is 120 acres of watershed land overlooking
Lake Manchaug. Snow shoe rentals will be available but will be snow-cover

Northbridge Students Take Aim Against Name Calling

NORTHBRIDGE, Mass. – A conversations that began in a Spanish class at Northbridge High School carried over into the cafeteria after school on Wednesday.

A group of students, all girls, gathered in the cafeteria to design T-shirts with personal messages about name-calling. Using markers, ribbon, yarn, glue and other craft material, the girls wrote the words they’ve been called, sometimes using stars rather than letters to keep the shirt school-appropriate.

The strongest message of all included two words: Words hurt.

HKT Chosen for DPW Feasibility Study

NORTHBRIDGE, Mass. – HKT Architects Inc. of Somerville will study the feasibility of redeveloping the existing Department of Public Works on Fletcher Street.

The firm was chosen last night after the Building, Planning and Construction Committee listened to the proposals of three companies – HKT, AECON and Maguire Group. All gave 20 to 30 minute presentations and then answered questions of the committee.

Fair Fosters Love of Reading at Balmer School

NORTHBRIDGE, Mass. – The after school hours at the Balmer School are busier than usual this week as students, siblings and parents shop the school's annual Book Fair.

School Librarian Michelle Muscatell manned the cash register in the library yesteray afternoon, chatting with parents and children, ringing up sales, and beaming over the success of the Fair, which is an annual fundraiser of the Parent Teacher Association.

The Book Fair has been open every afternoon this week. In addition, the school's Book Fair - Family Night was held last night.

FinCom Supports Two of Three Heritage Zone Changes

NORTHBRIDGE, Mass. – Expanding the Heritage District to include the 25-acre Oakhurst Retreat property on Hill Street has the support of the Finance Committee, as does the proposal to amend Heritage District zoning to allow uses other than residential.

The Finance Committee unanimously voted to support the Planning Board-sponsored Feb. 21 Special Town Meeting articles at a meeting last night. A third Planning Board proposal, however, was unanimously rejected by the board.

Delisle Goulet Post 92 Plans Ice Fishing Derby

GRAFTON, Mass. - The conditions on Lake Ripple may have been iffy this winter, but American Legion Delisle Goulet Post 92 has decided to go forward with its third annual Ice Fishing Derby on Feb. 18.

The event will be held on the lake, 7 a.m.-2:30 p.m. The judges' station will be located behind Cancun restaurant.

Prizes will be awarded at the post after a meat raffle with door prizes.

Last year's event drew over 65 fishermen from around the region, with the top prize awarded for a 4.9 lb. bass.

Police log; Minor Arrested for Possessing Alcohol

NORTHBRIDGE, Mass. - A 17-year-old Northbridge teen was arrested Wednesday and charged with being a minor in possession of alchol.

Police said Clement F. Roach, 17, of 25 Beanes Lane, was arrested at 1:52 a.m. after a motor vehicle stop on Providence Road near Beane's lane in the Rockdale section of the community.

He was held at the Northbridge Police Station for arraignment in Uxbridge District Court.

Arresting officers were Richard Gorman, Randy Lloyd and Kristina Westbury.

Stipend for Volunteers to be Town Meeting Proposal

NORTHBRIDGE, Mass. – A Special Town Meeting article that would open the door to paying stipends to volunteers doesn’t have the support of the Finance Committee.

The Retirement Board is asking voters to accept the provisions of Mass. General Laws which would allow the payment of between $3,000 and $4,500 to volunteers. Retirement Board member Beth Matson said the board currently has three vacancies, and a stipend would be an incentive to participate despite increased financial, training, and reporting demands on volunteers.
